Iron Horse utilizes the science of reading framework for teaching reading and writing. We also utilize Thinking Maps and Write from the Beginning for writing. Thinking Maps provides students with a way to visually represent his/her thinking across content areas.

Thinking Maps

Iron Horse encourages engagement and ownership of the students’ learning. Teachers gradually release new skills aligned with the district's priority learning outcomes; allowing for modeled teaching, guided practice and independent practice. Guided reading groups and book clubs are used to provide individual teaching strategies to small groups of children based upon their specific needs. Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension are taught throughout our K-5 classrooms in a manner that is meaningful and relevant to students.
