Iron Horse utilizes a balanced literacy approach for teaching reading and writing. We utilize the Jan Richardson framework for guided reading and Thinking Maps and Write from the Beginning for writing. Thinking Maps provides students with a way to visually represent his/her thinking across content areas.

Iron Horse encourages engagement and ownership of the students’ learning. Teachers gradually release new skills; allowing for modeled teaching, guided practice and independent practice. Guided reading groups and book clubs are used to provide individual teaching points to small groups of children based upon their specific needs. Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension are taught throughout our K-5 classrooms in a manner that is meaningful and relevant to students.
